Problem: Brush Points convert to lines automatically

I keep having this frustrating problem with the brush tool and the eraser tool. After a few minutes of painting the brush tool suddenly starts to make lines. The only way I can find to solve it temporarliy is to open a new file, save that and start painting in it. And then reopen the older file when the brush returns to nornal performance. With an hour orso I'm forced the restart the whole process when the brush tool, eraser tool, or lasso tool becomes unabel to make points and start making random lines again, instead of single points.

I have tried reseeting the the tool, throwing out the preferences, using the PSconfig file. I am looking for other suggestions to stop pulling me hair out!
