Problem with masking

Using latest Photoshop 2021 update. Having problem with masking. If I create solid colour overlay, then use paintbrush on the mask layer to erase some of the solid colour, it starts off ok but if I lift off and start in a new place then the brush switches to a halfway point of erasing and resinstating the solid colour.

Using Mac Big Sur 40Gb Ram i7 processor with all of the latest updates. Any ideas?

Please check the option panel for brush tool, make sure the settings are on right way.

Hi Manal,

That solved it. Thank you so much!

For some reason and I don't know how, the mode was on exclusion. As soon as it switched it to normal everything worked as it should.

Could you please post screenshots with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Options Bar, …) visible?
