Problem with smoothing/pen pressure

For some reason, my brush does a weird thing when both pen pressure and smoothing are on.

The line suddenly shrinks when 'smoothing' is ticked in the brush options. Lowering smoothing does not fix the problem, I don't know what to try, can someone explain why this happens?
