Problem with using PNG file

I want to layer PNG files onto photos to make composites. But I can't figure out how to add the PNGs into the layer stack. When I open a PNG, the background photo is hidden and I can't seem to figure out how to put the PNG on top of the base photo. The same files work for me in On1 but I would like to use Photoshop, which I think will give me a lot more flexibility. I'd appreciate any thoughts on where I'm going wrong. Thanks!

Another way is to choose Select > All in the PNG, and then choose Edit > Copy. Then make the destination image active, and choose Edit > Paste.

Thank you. Both your answer and the one above are working for me now. I'm not sure what I was doing wrong (I was trying the click and drag approach), but these options are working now. Thanks for taking the trouble to respond.

How are you trying to load the files? I'm having no problem either draging a png file into an open document, embedding a png file, or including png files in the load files into Photoshop layers from Bridge.

Thank you. I don't know what the problem was but this time (using different test files), I was able to click and drag the PNG onto the background layer; I was also able to use the Place Embedded option. I don't know what I was doing wrong but this is working for me. Thanks again!
