hi,

I am not advanced at all in photoshop so please bear with me. I am having a problem where when i save an image file to the desktop (or anywhere for that matter) the image only shows up in clipboard. I dont use clipboard, i dont want it. I just want the image file (jpeg or tiff) to show up on the actual desktop. I have tried preferences where you unclick export to clipboard. Nothing. Doesnt work.

You might benefit from taking some introductory courses in Photoshop literacy.  LinkedIn Learning (formerly Lynda.com) has structured, self-paced courses available online.

i agree fully that learning correct terminology is critical to any education. However, my point has always been that i have found multiple terms for the same thing. It's as simple, and therefore as confusing, as that.

Once you described it as "a black screen with thumbnails of my jpegs", it was quite clear what you were referring to,  FlyFalk. 😊

Hello, I will differ with my esteemed colleague, learning correct terminology will allow to get help quickly, both by giving you relevant searches, and by avoiding the "what do you call this" back and forth questions in between the initial one and the actual answer.

In order to learn the correct terms faster, the help file is a good place to start with (it is unfortunately not exhaustive, I an't find any info about the status bar, for instance.) https://helpx.adobe.com/be_en/photoshop/using/workspace-basics.html#home-screen where you will see the purpose of the help file: the images you see replicate the recent files you see in the file menu.

The images there are just shortcuts, they are not "stored" anywhere else than where you decided to save them. (assuming that you saved them on your computer, and not on Creative Cloud)

"I dont use clipboard, i dont want it."

Hi

When you cut or copy something, it is stored in a virtual storage area called a clipboard and can then be pasted into the same application or sometimes to a different application. When you say, "the image shows up in clipboard", that doesn't make sense. Can you clarify? Also, are you on Windows or Mac?

As i stated, i am not advanced at all in photoshop. When i say it shows up in clipboard, that is the best way i can explain it, even if that explanation is incorrectly phrased. Everything in computers is about semantics, and i dont know exactly what you call this thing. Its a black screen with thumbnails of my jpegs. i call it clipboard because i found that is what it is called in online research. Its the best i can do. This is my attempt at clarification, but i am sure it will only add to the confusion.

The point is i should be able to take a file off of a camera memory card, open that file, save it as a jpeg, and instruct the computer to save it to the desktop. Thats all i want, nothing more. I dont want lightroom, bridge, whatever. Just put the jpeg on the desktop- and by desktop i mean the actual desktop, not some kind of organizing tool by photoshop.

I am on an imac

Hi

It's perfectly okay that you don't know the terminology, and there is no reason you have to learn the correct terms. I think what you are calling a clipboard is what Photoshop calls the Welcome Screen. What you see there are the files the were opened recently. To clear them, you can:

  • Go to File > Recent Files (5th from top) > Clear Recent File list
You will have to do this each time.

    OR
  • Go to Photoshop > Preferences > File Handling (sixth from top) > Set the Recent File List to Zero
If you do this, they won't come back.

Does this work?

Not sure what you're asking.  If you're saying you can't save files to your hard drive, that's a permissions problem. To save files, you need a computer user profile with administrative level permissions and ample hard disk space.

Use Mac Finder, Windows File Explorer or Adobe Bridge to search for recently saved files on your hard drive.

Hi there,

Not sure if I understand the issue correctly, could you please share a screenshot here?
Also, which version of Photoshop and the operating system you're working with? https://helpx.adobe.com/in/photoshop/kb/basic-troubleshooting.html

We're here to help, just need more information.

Sahil
