Problems with placing images and text

When I try to place an embedded image I get the "Could not place because the source rectangle is empty." error, and when I try to create new text, it makes the font a hugely negative size and never actually resizes or shows up.  I'm running Photoshop CC 19.1.3 on Mac OS X El Capitan.

Hi

This is one of those cases where Photoshop has started to behave very unusually and I would definitely try a preference reset (Preferences > General > Reset Preferences on Quit   then close and restart Photoshop).

Photoshop saves preferences every time it closes and if they become corrupt - strange behaviour, such as that you describe, can result.

Thanks Dave,

I've done a couple preference resets, as well as a fresh install of Photoshop with no luck.
