Question

Program error when saving a layered PSD or TIFF file, but can still "Save As" under a different name

Hi,

I just updated to the latest version of Photoshop CC (22.3.1) on Mac Big Sur version 11.3. I am unable to save any Photoshop document without getting the message "Could not save XX due to a program error". But if I save as under a different name, it will save successfully. But I can't keep saving files under a new name every time I want to save or I'll run out of space very quickly. Has anyone found a solution to this? I'm regretting having updated as everything worked just fine before.

I figured out the problem. The external hard drive has to be formatted using one of the older Mac formats: Mac OS Journaled. You can't use APFS formatting, or you will get this error. Remember that formatting erases all data, so you need to either get a new hard drive, or move the files somewhere, format the drive, then move them back. Good luck!

We've also been saying all along that working directly to an external drive is not good practice. It's inviting problems. A save is a much more complex operation than a copy, and any bandwidth issues or flaky connections can damage your files. Corruption is much more likely.

In short - work locally, then copy over for storage.
