PS 20.0.04 Layer Style for Emboss Metal Effect Not Working In New Projects

Hello,

I use PS 20.0.04 CC 2019.

I created a logo that uses emboss and a few other layer style styles to make a nice metal looking logo. I saved the layer style as a "New Style".   When I created an entirely new project the next day and used the brush tool (with the same settings as the day before), and then selected the saved layer style, the brush stroke looks nothing like it did the day prior.  I.e., the brush stroke didn't have that nice embossed metal look.  In fact, it looks very low quality and non reflective.

Any help I can get would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Correct answer SouthButte

After going back and reviewing all the settings (to upload for you to review), I found that one setting under Bevel and Emboss\Shading\Altitude was set to 30 and not 74.  Once I set it to 74, it fixed the problem.

I wanted to thank all of you for reaching out and offering your help so quickly!!!!  I was really perplexed with this problem, but solved it.

Cheers!

Did the images have different resolutions?

Below are examples of the images I created with the embossed metal look.  The first image is correct and the second image was the problem I was having.

These images were create by making paths in Photoshop with a brush.

As I am not very technical with Photoshop, how would I determine the resolution of the metal brush strokes images that I created?

Michael is right in that B&E uses pixels rather than % (which is what Alien Skin Eye Candy uses), so a different image size and brush thickness will make a difference.  Metallic effects tend to use W shaped radical curves, which with B&E means Gloss Contour.  I like to remove all but two of the points from the curve which makes it easier to adjust.  Having Anti Aliasing enabled reduces the jagged edges we sometimes see with B&E.    The Shading  Altitude is also important, but it is manually controlling the Gloss Contour that makes all the difference.

Please read this (in particular the section titled "Supply pertinent information for quicker answers"):

https://forums.adobe.com/docs/DOC-7044

Could you please post a screenshot taken at View > 100% with the pertinent Panels (Layers, Channels, Options Bar, …) visible?

What are the image’s Color Mode and bit depth?

Case #1

This might be because your file dimensions are radically different.

Let's say you had a document that was 100x100px. You drew a shape, applied a 10px stroke to it and then saved that as a style.

Next you created a larger file that was say 1000x1000px. Within this you drew a similar sized shape (compared to the document) and applied the style you had saved earlier. The stroke will look tiny in this case.

Case #2

You might want to see if you are using Global Light within your Effects.
