OS 10.14.6, 27" iMac 2019 2TB internal SSD, 2TB ext SSD scrtch disk, 1 to 3 GB layered files in PS CC. Internal SSD: 1 of 2TBs available; ext SSD: used only for scratch; both formatted in APFS.

What is best way to configure prefs for faster saves/eliminating brush lag?

Set scratch disk on the internal SSD, not the external.

Slow brushing is usually a video driver problem. Unfortunately the video driver is integrated into the OS on Mac, so you can't update it separately from OS updates.
