PS masking brushes?

masking and brush types. looking to correct faces in group photo, when I select the brush I am defaulting to the brightness adjustment, and I am unable to mask or unmask layers. How do I get to correct brush?

Could you please post screenshots with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Channels, Brushes, Brush Settings, Options Bar, …) visible?
