PS save in the wrong format of months

Until a couple of months ago PS did like that:
I opened a NEF file, edited it and pressed Ctrl-S (as far as I remember) and PS saved it as a JPG.
Now it wants to save it as a PSD and I must use time to change it to JPG. And no matter what I do I cannot change it.
I use 22.3.1 Release

The difference is that ACR now, very sensibly, opens the image in 16 bits per channel color depth. A few versions ago it was 8 bits by default.

This is not supported in the jpeg file format specification, which is limited to 8 bits per channel.

If you change ACRs workflow options so that it opens as 8 bits per channel, jpeg will be available under Save/Save As in Photoshop. Otherwise, you need Save A Copy.

However, Photoshop has never saved to jpeg by default. Because of the severe limitations in the jpeg format, jpeg can never be a default format in Photoshop. Almost anything you can do to an image in Photoshop will put it outside the jpeg specification.
