When using quick selection tool from "select and mask" of any adjustment layer PS, IF "sample all layers" IS NOT SELECTED PS blocks. The same does not happen if "sample all layers" is selected and does not happen if use quick selection tool directly on the image. I resetted the tool but nothing changed

No freeze here on 20.0.2 with Windows 10.

Remember when you double click on a white mask, to open select and mask,  then you are starting with everything selected so only taking away from the selection (to turn the mask black ).

Of course with sample all layers unchecked then quick mask will not react to the picture content which is on the layer(s) below), so it doesn't really make sense not to use sample all layers on an adjustment layer mask.

If you do get a freeze in S&M try the Esc key.

Thank you Dave,

I fully agree with your comments, if you do not check "sample all layers" quick mask cannot react to the picture content. However - from a user point of view - now I have to remember each time to check "sample all layers": it would be useful so set "sample all layers" cheched as a default (as it was in previous versions) since it make no sense to have this unchecked.

I did not know about Esc to get out from a freeze, very useful. Thank you.

Hi! Can you post a screen shot of what you are describing?

Thanks,

Michelle

Hi Michelle, thank for your attention.

I attach the screenshot you asked for: I started selecting the white hat and the process stopped. By the way,as you know, the normal mode of operation (with older versions of PS OR checking "sample all layers") is that after few brush strike a selections is done: this did not happened here, what you see in orange is the area I brushed. It seems that if you do not tell explicitly to look also to other layers PS attempts to make a selection only from the current layer which is an adjustment layer where no image is present.

Thanks so much for the screen shot!

Can I ask you to repeat your question. I read it above in your original post, and I am not understanding what help you need. Do you need help with making a selection or just general help with Select and Mask?

Thanks,

Michelle
