Question

Ps2020 Type Tool paragraph alignment behaves opposite to expectations

Photoshop 21.1.1 and Mac Mojave 10.14.6.

Select Type tool, click in document, add type. In paragraph properties, click left align: type aligns right. Click right align, type aligns left.

In Preferences, Latin and East Asian layout is selected. There is no conflict between alignement symbols (or any others) shown in menu bar and paragraph panel.

Behavior persists after quitting and restarting Ps2020 and after quitting to install latest update and restarting again.

I saw a 2017 discussion of a similar case in CS6. The thread pointed to a Julianne Kost video about moving the Preferences file so that it will reset to default.

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html.

This concerns me on a couple of points:

1. Is it recommended for Ps2020?

2. Is it wise for a hobbyist who doesn't spend much time working that deep? Adobe live help is backed up and this isn't the time to risk compromising the app.

I would appreciate a current and, ideally, simple remedy. Thank you.

Before you reset anything, see if this is the issue. When you click and then type, you will see a little "point" when you have an insertion point. When you choose aligment of left, center, or right, the text aligns to that point where you clicked, and you may get the results you are descibing. To "fix" it, do one of the following:

  • Pay attention to where you click
  • Move the text with the Move tool
  • Drag a frame with the Type tool, then type. Alignment will be across the frame, which can be resized.

If this fails, reset your Type tool from the options bar

or reset Preferences from Preferences > General > Reset Preferences on Quit.

But see if this works first.

Jane, thank you. Please see my reply above for an update on everything I have tried, including your suggestions. If I have misunderstood, please set me straight, but it seems to me that in my case the tool simply is not behaving as expected. Thanks.

Hello, in the paragraph panel, click on the top right menu, and select reset paragraph.

Do it also for the Character panel, and maybe on a right-click on the type tool icon in the option bar.

If you do not want to reset your preferences, shut down photoshop, drag the entire preferences folder to the desktop, restart Ps, you can revert by replacing your old preferences.

Thank you. I have tried each of the steps you suggested trying in the Type tool options and paragraph and character panels, opening and closing Photoshop each time. I also tried General>Reset Preferences on Quit.

I tried to clear the preference settings by holding Option+Command+Shift at startup: I did get the delete settings dialog and did confirm. Then I closed Photoshop, reopened, and tried with a new document and new text. (Actually, I did this twice.) Nothing has changed at all.

I can try dragging the Preferences folder to the desktop if that would be different, but I would need some instructions to help me find that file on my Mac. I see a couple of candidates, and don't want to make the wrong mistake.

I also experimented with jane-e's suggestion below. I took care that center justification was selected when I activated the type tool, so as I typed my text was centered on the insertion point. However, when tried to left or right align the text, results were opposite expectations. I believe the suggestion to draw a frame is a workaround, not a means of correcting the behavior of the tool. I would still prefer to have the tool simply work as intended.

What if I uninstall 2020 entirely, then reinstall it? I am a Creative Cloud subscriber.

Thank you.

Mary
