.PSB Format Changed/Gone?

I'm working on a painting that has grown to 2.71 GB. I've done lots of these but always in the past once I start approaching 2 GB (give or take), I've had to start saving in the .psb (Large Document) format. I've not been asked/told to do so once with this painting and I've been well over the 2 GB "barrier" for quite a while on this one. I''m on v22.4.3, Big Sur (latest). If anyone else out there is working on a large file (over 2 GB), can you check and see if you can still save in .psd format? The option to save in the .psb format is still in the menu, but from what I''m seeing, it's no longer required. This is a very welcome change, if this is the case.

Remember the PSD limit is filesize on disk i.e. after compression etc. Where are you measuring your 2GB?

Hi Dave,

Yeah, I'm getting the info off the info bar at the bottom L side of the frame. I just checked it in Bridge and it says 1.27 GB (I have a reference photo as a layer in the document which is normally turned off, which may account for the discrepancy). Anyway, it does look like I'm still actually still well below the 2 GB limit, so I guess this was just wishful thinking. Adobe has really made some good upgrades this year and I thought this may have been snuck in but I guess not for this one. Anyway, no biggie. Thanks for this Dave, appreciate the head's up.

Ahh, ok. I was hoping. Anyway, once I reach the limit, I'm sure it will tell me it can't save it. That's when I switch over to the .psb format. I'll leave it as is for now though to see how far it will allow me to go. I mean, we did get our recent files thumbnails back out of the blue yesterday, so who knows... 😉  . Thanks for chiming in.

That appears to be a fluke and you should save as a psb at the earliest possible time.
