Question

PSCC and Step Backward behavior...

Hello,

For years I found PS's "Step Backwards" behavior extremely frustrating, and was very happy when it was finally addressed, putting an end to switching layers automatically while painting.

However...

Step Backwards and Undo seem to still automatically "undo" multiple things at once, in some circumstances.

For example...

1. Create a layer, and draw something on it. Switch to the move tool.

2. Move it in one direction.

3. Move it another direction.

4. Press Step Backwards.

5. You are now back to the end of step #1...for some reason...

Why on earth are you not back to step #2 instead? You can move the layer way more than twice, and still be bumped all the way back to Step #1, with a single "STEP" backwards. Even plain "undo" works this way...why? This gives you little control to fine tune translations. I'm right back to auto layer switching territory, where I have to manually select another tool so that PS stops caching the translations into a single undo package. Is there some kind of switch, setting, or toggle that can permanently get rid of this silly behavior that I've missed, or what? Even if so, why on earth would anyone think this is good default behavior?

I'm sorry if this comes off like ranting...but why can't Adobe give me an undo system that doesn't require me to do extra work on a daily basis? Why can't it just be...simple? One press correlates to ONE thing I did....you know....like every other program on earth.

Often, I want to line something up by eye, slide it over to another element to see how trim it is, and then undo it back to it's original position, tweak it if I need to, and repeat until it's flush. It's quick and intuitive. This "feature" makes that workflow really difficult. What am I missing?

Hi when you look at the history panel it treats a series of moves as a single change of state in history unless you use another tool in between, or click on another layer.

You could , just as a workaround, hit BV which does cause it to record the move state at that point (it actually switches to the brush and immediately back to the move tool).

I suspect it was done this way to avoid filling up the entire history in a couple of "moves" as a layer is nudged into place.

If you want to place a feature request, you can do so here:

Ughhh...as I feared, this is another mandatory workflow "feature" that wasn't given any choice. It's deju vu all over again. Switching between the brush and move tools is already what I do, and it's very, very tedious. At the very least they could have made your normal "undo" work in a logical fashion.

Bundling multiple actions into a single undo was the EXACT PROBLEM with stepping backwards to different layers, in the first place. It's like there's some kind of conspiracy to keep PS from having a simple, logical undo system.

If there's any real feature I want implemented, it's an end to this mentality. Don't implement a workflow feature into basic operations and make it mandatory. Give people options. Let ME make the choice as to whether or not I want my history clogged up with translations. Don't make the decision for me, and make me do more work.

I don't think the move tool history has changed. I just went back to CS6 and it is the same.
