Radeon RX 580: Bad masking performance after upgrade from GTX 760 (Win 10)

Hi,

I upgraded my GPU on friday from an MSI GTX 760 2GB Gaming to a Sapphire Nitro+ RX 580 8GB on Windows 10 and I am experiencing performance issues while masking images. The cursor gets more sluggish than before and the time from mouse release to re-adjusting the mask increased for about 1-2 sec.

My other system specs are following:

- Intel Xeon E3-1231 v3 (8 Threads, 3.4 GHz)

- 32 GB DDR3 Ram

- Intel H97 Chipset

- All SSD Setup

- Windows 10 Professional 64 bit

- Latest Photoshop (Creative Cloud)

Install procedure: Uninstall nvidia drivers, reboot insafe-mode, clean nvidia drivers with ddu, shutdown, install new card, boot, install new drivers, reboot and delete photoshop preferences.

The RX 580 is recognized by photoshop and accelerated in Advanced Mode. I tried switching to Standard Mode or Simple. This sadly did not change anything.

One major factor for buying the new card was the DX12 support that's mentioned in the Camera Raw/Photoshop requirements for better performance.

The card performs very good in gaming situations where I could notice a massive performance increase over the old GTX 760, so I think the card is installed fine. Illustrator seems to work fine.

Are there any advanced troubleshooting steps I missed? The situation is very odd.

Thank you,

Chris

"Legacy Compositing" with "Normal Mode" is the fastest.

It's not much help to Chris now, but this in fact a brilliant demonstration of how buggy video drivers impact Photoshop performance. On the upside, most of these bugs get fixed with subsequent driver versions. So keep looking for updates.

My theory is that drivers are made to get the latest games to work. That's where their money is. So they take shortcuts, gaffer tape and velcro, and fix it properly when they have time later. Just take a look at the release notes for any Radeon and GeForce release, and it becomes clear what their focus is.

So after some more troubleshooting I've seen that OpenCL is greyed out too.

Now I installed driver 18.8.1 and OpenCL is not greyed out anymore. This did not change the behaviour in advanced mode or new computing engine. I still have to tune it down to normal and the legacy engine for decent masking performance. At least I can now use all filters.

After all I still don't think that the driver is really the problem in this whole scenario.

There's no info on how the new computing engine works or what it's utilizing more than before. There's no info on what is advanced and normal mode. This could be communicated way better by adobe – at least to know which features I'm missing out with my new card, which I bought after finding it on the compatibility list of photoshop and camera raw.

A little rant: I could have bought a 1070 TI for the time I could not really work since friday when this whole process started (I don't know if this one would have issues too ...)

Alltogether I'm quite disappointed now.

Hi PM,

We're really sorry for all the hassle. Could you please turn on the "Legacy Compositing" in Photoshop preferences > Performance tab, restart Photoshop and check the performance.

Regards,

Mohit

Hi Mohit,

Thank you for your answer.

"Legacy Compositing" with "Normal Mode" is the fastest.

What are the differences in legacy compositing and new compositing engine?

What's the technical difference between advanced and normal mode?

And last but not least: What's the deal with the card not working with more performance in advanced mode and with the new compositing engine? I would like to know in-depth what the driver is not supporting correctly, maybe I can get a work-around. The situation is a bit odd because the card has been released in Q2/2017 and should have resolved it's baby bugs by now ...

With the "Legacy Compositing" on, the entire performance switches back to CPU. If you have supported GPU installed then you may need to check for the updated drivers. Also, please try using Photoshop in the hidden admin account and check the performance.

To know more about enabling the hidden admin account, please refer the following link: https://www.intowindows.com/enable-the-hidden-administrator-account-in-windows-10/
