Random Crashes When Using Shape/Pen Tool in Combination (Photoshop CC, Version 20.0.8)

I am getting truly fed up with the complete randomness of crashes stemming from using the shape tool, in combo with the pen (making word balloons for comic panels). In one instance it works like a dream. Then I go to the next balloon and merely touch the pen to the shape and buh-bye: crash time. It's killing my productivity, infuriating and there's seemingly no rhyme nor reason. Any solutions? Thanks!
