In terms of correct representation in color managed software, it doesn't matter. They will all be handled correctly. There is no "proper" setting - you choose according to intended use and particular needs. There is, BTW, no reason to use one color space consistently.

In applications without color management, neither is right. The least incorrect is sRGB - because most monitors are close enough to sRGB that it will display roughly right even without color management. But it will never be entirely right, because those applications don't even know what a color profile is.

I never recommend ProPhoto to inexperienced users. If you don't understand the implications of working in an extremely large color space like ProPhoto, stay away from it. In that case it's better to stick to sRGB, which is always a safe choice.

The one from Photos has slightly deeper shadows, or clipped blacks, but Photos is not color managed

All LCDs have a marked dip in the shadows. This is native to the technology and universal. Color management using icc profiles corrects for this in the numbers sent to the monitor, and thereby linearizes the response.

This is the difference you're seeing. It's normal and expected. You cannot trust applications without color management, like "Photos".

Post a screenshot showing the image Histogram. We have no way of knowing what you see onscreen.

    Hi Corrinap,

That shouldn't be happening, let's make it right.

As the raw images are washed out when opened in Photoshop, could you please share Photoshop's Help>System Info dialog text with us? as it would be helpful for us to troubleshoot further.

Also, please check the color space in Camera Raw as suggested by Dave.

You should try changing the screen color profile to sRGB IEC61966-2.1 and see how it goes.

Change Color Profile for both Windows & macOS: https://www.lightroomqueen.com/how-do-i-change-my-monitor-profile-to-check-whether-its-corrupted/

Without some additional information it is difficult to advise you.

When you move from Camera Raw to Photoshop , what colour space are you using? Check at the bottom of the ACR window

Have you set your monitor profile in your operating system - In Windows 10, check under Settings >System >Display > Color Profile?

You say you have tried different settings - what have you set? - please show screenshots
