Rectangle cursor plus shift not working in updated version

Has anyone got a fix for this? I updated to 21.2.1 and now when you hold down shift key and use rectangle selection tool, but it is not making a square AND it is not turning off when you release. You have to select a different tool and then go back. Any help available this weekend?

Thanks to all who made the "reset tools" suggestion. I have never had to do this before but it worked. Back in business!

Can confirm "reset tool" surprisingly worked for me too. Now shift + rectangular marquee tool gives a perfect square. Instructions near the end of this article https://www.photoshopessentials.com/basics/reset-toolbar-photoshop-cc/

Make sure the Style in the Tool's option bar is set to Normal not fixed ratio or fixed size

Try resetting your tools Shift works for me in the past and still does in 21.2.1. You can also set the tool to fixed aspect ratio 1 1 here I just used shift for 1:1

Shift is also Add to selection. To add a square additional selection you need to press Shift start dragging out a selection pause release and repress Shift then continue to drag out the additional square selection.

I see. I had my marquee tool on Add to Selection which doesn't work with Shift key. It must be on New selection.

That may be their Problem it not set to the first New selection icon in the tool bar. I have always used the modifier keys.... instead of the icon in the tool bar I'm lazy.

No I set the icon to add selection. If I start to drag out a selection then press and hold shift the selection dragging turns square. If it the drag out a second selection and press and hold shift the selection again turns square.

It seems to be the sequence drag then Pressing Shift. That is why when set to new I needed to press Shift to switch to add mode. Drag then release and the press and hold shift for Square selection.

I also use legacy Transform. For me Shift has always been the constrain modifier old folk find change hard....

I think you are mistaken.

#1 The rectangular marquee tool has never made a square when the shift key is held down. That only works with shapes.

#2 Use Ctrl + D to deselect.
