Refine Edge output options

I opened a .psd file and loaded a selection.  I then used Refine Edge to improve the selection.  I had only a single raster layer (not a background layer).  When I wanted to save the work I did in Refine Edge, I noted that Selection and Layer Mask output options were grayed-out.  Can anyone explain to me why that might be?

Did you have Decontaminate Colors checked?  If yes, that forces output to New Layer with Mask.

Just want to thank you guys for the information.  I'm using CS6.  I did have Decontaminate Colors checked, and, yes, when I unchecked it, those other output options were available.  One of the joys of learning PS is that there are a million of these hidden thorns, way too many to be covered fully in manuals and tuts.  Thanks, again.

What version of Photoshop. Adobe is replacing Refine edge with Select and Mask.  Though you can still get to Refine edge it has been reported that Refine Edge will be removed.
