removing the checkered background from a transparency image

I've downloaded a transparent image but when I go to "place" it on an image, all of the checkered background is still there.  How do I remove the background.  I'm clearly a novice at this but would like some help please!  Thanks in advance!

If the image itself contains a checkerboard background then it's definitely NOT a transparent image. From which Stock image house did you purchase your image?

 

Adobe Stock distributes transparent images in EPS or AI format for Illustrator.  The JPG is merely a thumbnail representation for the website.  They do not offer any transparent images in PNG , GIF or TiFF.

Make sure you download in a format that supports transparency e.g. PNG or TIFF  not jpeg.

    You probably downloaded the wrong item. But none the less. If it is still of decent quality you can use your magic wand tool and increase your tolerance (located at the too if the frame usually to about 50). Make sure your layer selected is a layer and not background. Or you could use object selection tool and select your main subject area and then select inverse to delete the background. Again make sure your layer says layer and not background.

      If you got the image from Adobe Stock, give us the number and we can look at it.

       

      • If the file is EPS/AI and you open it in Illustrator, you will be able to hide or delete the layer with the checkerboard pattern.

      • If you open the EPS/AI file directly into Photoshop, it will come in on one layer. You will need to select the part you want, then apply a layer mask to hide the checkerboard pattern then save it, as Dave said, in a format that supports transparency.

       

      The Layers panel can be activated from the Window menu in both applications.
