Required Billboard/Hoarding Help !!

Hello, I am Anand Sindhav from India. I am using coreldraw for billboard and hoarding design and it is very easy to create size like 40x20 Feet, 20x10 feet and 10x20 feet size in this software but I find trouble while using in Adobe Photoshop. I need your guidance to design billboard/hoarding design in Photoshop. How can I make small size in Photoshop and How can I enlarge it with original size of billboard like 40x20/20x20 size etc.

Lets take an example, I can create 40x20 (WxH) feet hoarding very easily in Coreldraw software but How can create such size in Photoshop as It becomes very bigger file while keeping this size. Now, In Photoshop, Creativity is endless so I like to create design in Photoshop but I find only one problem that is Size. Is there any method to create a smaller size of billboard design and we can create JPG output file with printing 72dpi/40dpi file format with exact size of 40x20 Feet. I need steps to solve this problem as I like to start work in Adobe Photoshop for Billboard design.

Question:

How can I create a smaller size/design of 40x20 Feet size hoarding in Photoshop? like can I reduce the proportion of feet into inch and divided proportionally and last proportion size can be created in Photoshop with maximum 300dpi resolution and at the time of making of output JPG file of 40x20 Feet, it can be created? Please provide your style of working to solve this problem.

      What print resolution works for what viewing distance?

      Your printer is asking for a higher resolution than anyone will be able to see at normal viewing distances.  If you want to use those resolutions then just enter the numbers he has given but be aware that you are working with very large files which may slow your PC down

      So for the first example  just enter 480 inches by 240 inches at 40 ppi.

      For teh second 240 x 120 inches at 72 ppi

      As for CMYK - you need to taks to the printer and find out which specific CMYK profile he requires. There is no generic CMYK

      Hi

      This is a billboard. It will be viewed from a distance. Therefore you do not need to use 300 ppi - it a waste. That resolution is used for viewing a book page from book reading distance.

      There is a formula for working out required resolution ppi = 2/( viewing distance x 0.000291)

      Viewing distance is roughly 1.5 x  the diagonal so for example 40 x 20 feet = 480 x 240 inches. The diagonal is 537 inches. 1.5 x that is roughly 805 inches.  So the required resolution is 2/(805 x .000291) = 8.5 ppi so round it to about 10ppi.

      Anything higher is a waste - your eyes will just not see it.

      That will give you a much easier to work with 4800 x 2400 pixel image.

        Dear Dave Sir,

        First of all, Thank you for your guideline but still I am confused about this formula. Can you please provide steps for following size of billboard?

        Size: 40x20 (WxH) in Feet

        Size: 20x10 (WxH) in Feet

        Size: 10x20 (WxH) in Feet

        What should I keep parameter while creating a new file in Photoshop?

        Width : ?

        Height ?

        Resolution: ? - Pixel Per Inch

        Color Mode : CMYK - 8 Bit

        What should be the output file resolution while exporting 40x20 Feet size in JPG format? Our printer needs 40x20 Feet size with 40dpi and 20x10 Feet size with 72dpi as per printer specification.

        Is there any video available to solve this problem then please provide link OR your steps guidance will be also good sir.

        CorelDraw is a vector editing application (the Adobe equivalent is Illustrator) and Photoshop is a raster (bitmap) application. When making large posters you don't need such high resolution as they are, unlike a book or magazine, viewed from a distance.

        I suggest before you proceed further you get some specifications and advice from the company that's printing the poster, including the colour mode, the format they require and the maximum size they can print.
