Restore windows size settings after resetting preferences. [was: Stupid question...]

I'm sure this is a stupid question, but here goes... I had to reset my preference file, to try to correct a problem I was having with brushes and selection tools. After the reset, I’ve been trying to get my screens back the way I had them. All is well except for one thing. If I am working on a large file, and need to open a smaller reference file in another tab, when it opens, all other file windows are resized down to the size of the new file, making it necessary to drag everything back to the size they were. Where is the setting to keep all the windows the size I left them? It is aggravating. Please help.

Ok, this is a Mac and that's what I use. I see the Application Frame is unchecked under the Window menu. I guess this is what you prefer. I like to keep mine checked.

I need to run an experiment to be sure the answer I give you works.

Ok, use Cmd k to get to Preferences  Select "Workspace" in the left pane and uncheck "Open Documents as Tabs".

Close your files and restart Photoshop and tell me how the files load.

Could you take a screenshot of your Photoshop area including panels and workspace and paste it here? We need to see what you are seeing. Do this with the Zoom tool selected. I need to see what the Zoom Tool settings in the Option Bar is like.

How to take and post screenshots.

The entire Photoshop app, menus, toolbars, panels and a few sample files open showing the problem.

Select the Zoom Tool so I can see the settings.
