Question

"Save As" does not update file name!

It just creates a duplicate file, that I'm not working on. This causes massive version control issues.

I read to disable 'saving in background', but that disables backups!!!

Hi @trentk53045743, I'm not sure if I follow? Do you have “Do not append “copy” to filename when saving a copy” enabled or disabled under File Handling in Preferences? If you are “overriding” the file you are working on and want to update it, simply “Save” to keep the same name. If you want to make a backup (copy) of that file, or create incremental copies, do a “Save as” and either append the name automatically with “copy” or give the file a new name (i.e., a version number). It might be that I’m missing something else you are trying to achieve in your workflow.

You can read another discussion about something similar from a few years ago (probably not helpful, lol).

I want to do the latter.... the file I am working on should be the most up to date, say I SAVE AS, ad V2 and keep working. all that does is create a new file outside of my working file, and my working file name remains the same.

This used to not be an issue, I now have to close my current one, and open the new name. It's very inneffecient obviously.

I see; no, that's not right. I've never had this happen to me, and I just confirmed file naming is working correctly (Windows 10; Photoshop 25.0.0 Release). When I “Save as” with a new name, that new file is now open, the old one is replaced, in other words, and I'm working on the new version automatically.

You might want to try resetting your Preferences, as it sounds like some type of glitch. Also, please confirm what OS you're using (did you update to Sonoma?) and if you are running Photoshop 25.0.0 Release. Any other system changes or updates lately? Here are my file saving options.
