Saving Files as jpeg photoshop cc 2019

I work with .cr2 files then save as .jpeg when I'm done.

Yesterday, without making any changes that I'm aware of, photoshop CC 2019 suddenly started defaulting to .psd instead of .jpeg when I choose "save as". It's a pain, every time, to scroll down to .jpeg. I also save files in multiple places (primary and backup copies). In the past, once the file was saved as a .jpeg, the copy i was working on remained as a .jpeg. Suddenly, it remains as a .cr2 file and I have to rename the file for each copy saved.

I don't think I changed any settings. If anyone knows how this suddenly, spontaneously got screw up, please let me know how to reset it.

Thanks!

DK

Hi DK,

Sorry to hear that you have to select jpeg every-time you want to save, please try resetting the preferences of Photoshop back to default and see if it helps.

Preferences Reset Photoshop - https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html

Please make sure that you back up your custom actions & brushes before resetting the Preferences.

It defaults to PSD when the file has properties not supported in the jpeg file format specification - layers and 16 bit depth are the most obvious. If, for instance, you have cropped with "hide pixels" instead of "delete pixels", jpeg is off limits because that gives you a floating Layer 0, which is not allowed.

In that case you can save out a jpeg copy, but you will still be prompted to save the original, to a format that supports all properties.

That was my thought too, but toggling that didn't fix it. I forgot about the "reset all tools". That solved it for me!
