Question

Screenshot colors off in most recent update

How do I again get the choice of opening a clipboard file (screenshot) with my monitor profile rather than the default RGB profile?  This profile option seems to have disappeared with the new PS update.  When I open a psd file, I always have the choice.

In the update before this one, when I wanted to paste a screenshot into Photoshop, I could choose my monitor profile in the New dialog box to get the exact colors of the screenshot.

Now with this update (May 2018), the New dialog box doesn't have a way to choose what profile to open the clipboard file with.  The RGB colors profile is the default for opening a new file, and the colors are off.

Is there a video about color management/profiles?

Also, I'm noticing if I open a png, I'm also not getting the profile choice, and it's defaulting to the RGB profile, but the colors are correct.

Pasting a screenprint from a webpage to Photoshop still isn't working.  On the below image, the colors on the right are from the webpage.  On the left is the pasted-into-PS screenprint and even with the monitor profile assigned, the colors are off.  Again, this has only been happening since the last update.

Then you need to look at how your web browser handles color management.

If the application handles color management correctly, what it sends to the video card and monitor should already be converted into monitor color space. The screenshot records Monitor RGB values, not document RGB values. That's why you assign the monitor profile, because that's what the RGB numbers refer to.

If the application (browser) isn't color managed, it most likely just passes the original RGB numbers straight through. So then you need to assign that profile. In this case it's not a question of "correct" - it won't be - but merely getting them to match.

Either way, this last scenario, pasting an outside screenshot into Photoshop - that's not a Photoshop problem. That's just about how your browser does color management.

I hear you and would agree except that this last update changed something.  I've been doing the screenprint pastes into Photoshop for years, and only now am I having this problem.

Color Settings make no difference here. You need to assign the monitor profile one way or another.

I've "always" had an action to do screenshots: assign monitor profile > convert to sRGB > save to desktop (with sRGB profile embedded).

If you make screenshots often, it pays to assign an F key to it.

I find when my  Photoshop Color setting default to ProPhotoRGB and a use windows print screen to capture the desktop.  When I paste into a new clipboard size document that the colors look off a bit.

If I set Photoshop color settings to default to sRGB and do the same the colors I look look correct.  Windows desktop default color space is sRGB.

I do not know if you will be able to see the differences look at link in the tow Photoshop image windows

The top one does not match the link you see on my left display

You can also use menu Edit>Assign Profile and try different profiles to see which one look correct.  srgb is in this case.....

I'm a little colorblind and I cans see the differences.  10% of men are somewhat color blind My earth look better than yours.....

How did the image get into the clipboard?  Did Photoshop copy a color manage image into the clipboard.  Or did you use a system screen capture feature  to copy you screen, active window, or part of the screen into the clipboard.  Or did you use some image application to copy an image into the clipboard.   What color space does you system use for you systems desktop. How do you have your Photoshop Colors settings set.  How are color profile miss matches handled? Your monitor Color profile should be configured into your system device divers so color will be correct  applications can manage colors correctly. There is a lot to color management and not all application color mange images.

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer!  So many questions; however, just giving a screenprint of your Color Settings dialog totally helps.  I'll follow it and see if it works.  Thanks again.

I hoped that checking Ask when Pasting would make a difference, but it doesn't.  I'm still getting "off" colors when pasting and it isn't not giving me a choice of color profiles.

To get the screenprint, I do an alt-printscreen (I'm on Windows, sorry guys) and then File > New, Clipboard.  When the blank file opens, I paste the screenprint from the clipboard.

Before, I had the option when creating the New file of choosing the Monitor color profile, but that option has been taken away from the New dialog box.
