Select and mask is not working in Photoshop version 25.9.0

Question

I select a subject then go to "Select and Mask" hoping to use the refine edge tool. I get a message that "This will discard your current selection. Do you want to continue?" (That's new) I click OK. It definitely deletes my selection but it will not let me do a quick selection. If I hit "select subject", I get the same message and then it does nothing.

Is anyone else having this problem? Does anyone have a solution?

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.
