Select and Mask Refine Edge in 2023 strange output

When using the refine hair tool, my mask looks good but the output in the layer doesn't seem to reflect what the mask looks like... am I doing something wrong?

      Can you please post a screen shot that includes the refine hair settings?

        In Select and Mask mode look in Properties > View Mode. From the View drop-down change to: On Layer, for example while refining edges.

         

        It may be Edge Detection > Radius in your case, I am just guessing.
