Question

Selecting / deselecting with the move tool

So frustrating. Am I missing something? Pre-cc I was able to drag+select on the canvas, and then drag to DEselect / unselect specific layers (sometimes there are just too many layers to go individually click on the layers panel / the objects are too small to individually click on the canvas) - but now this deselecting functionality using the move tool is just gone? It's a huge part of how I work and I am so confused as to why this feature would have been removed??

Photoshop CC, mac OS high sierra (but it's been a year long struggle with other machines, PC and operating systems).

Is there some new secret keyboard shortcut that's buried under the millions adobe seems to feel are necessary?

Help!

Should clarify, I used to be able to hold shift and drag the move tool over the canvas with already selected layers to DEselect specific layers.

On windows with the move tool with auto select checked. If I hold the shift key press I find with a Click over a layer I can Add or remove layers in a group of selected layers.   However can not remove all selected layers in the group an only selected layer will remain selected.  I can use the layers palette to deselect all layers.

With the mouse button and shift key held down ITS a little funky how layers get added and removed from the selected group of layers the background layer does not play in the move tool autoselect layer game
