Selection disappears after paste

I am having an issue where my selection is disappearing after I copy and paste to a new layer. It doesn't matter what I use, cmd+c, cmd+v, or cmd+j. When I paste the object to a new layer, I want the selection to remain. How can this be achieved?

    Thanks! I figured out that if I command click on the new layer, it will reload the selection based on the layer transparency. That is what I was looking for.
