separate ellipse layers going invisible?

Basically, I drawn an ellipse. It becomes Ellipse 1 in my Layers tab. I draw another ellipse. It becomes Ellipse 2, and while Ellipse 1 still exists as a layer, I can no longer see it on my canvas. The eyeball next to the Ellipse 1 layer is still open. But I cannot view Ellipse 1 unless I click on the layer directly--at which point Ellipse 2 is no longer visible (but the layer remains, eyeball open).

I am running Ps CS6.

How do I then make just an outline? Because that's the end goal. No color inside the ellipse.

Click on the Fill and click on the then click on the Stroke and select the color.

Instructions for Shape layers, though some stuff doesn't apply to cs6, since this is for photoshop cc.

That's as expected.  In the absence of any fill or stroke values, there is nothing to see.

Stroke is the outline color.  Fill is the center color.

Click on the Fill and select a color.

Right now you have neither fill or stroke, so your just seeing the ellipse path

which only shows when a shape layer is selected.
