Smart Filter greyed out (Adobe Photoshop 2023)

I'm working on an 8bit RGB image, my layer is a smart object, but for some reason the "Smart Filter" tab under Layers is greyed out. I'm not sure how to turn it on. Purpose is to add drop shadow and lighting effects to a mockup im making.

    Can you post screenshot with Layers panel and expanded and visible to illustrate the issue?
