Was CorelDRAW installed after Illustrator? I'd check at the operating-system level to ensure what opens AI files by default.

It's weird that Photoshop chooses CorelDRAW over Illustrator. I'm assuming that Photoshop follows whatever the operating system does for defaults.

Unfortunately, I can't say which of the programs was installed first. I am a teacher and this is my student's question.
But I have encountered such a problem with the XD application. Reinstalling programs and the order did not affect. Anyway, smart object was opened in XD,. although it was created from ai.

Now that's weird, especially if it was originally an AI file.

A good way to check (on Windows) is to simply browse using Windows Explorer. If the icon for a specific file format doesn't match what's supposed to open it, that's definitely the problem. (e.g., An AI file shows a CorelDRAW icon.) A way to fix that is to right-click the file > Open with > Choose another app, then choose the app and check the "Always use this app to open" option.

EDITED TO ADD: Forgot to mention that I have no idea how it's done on macOS. Maybe someone can chime in.
