Question

smart object updating for Camera Raw filter changes

I open an image in PS as a smart object, go to carmera raw filter, make changes, close and the changes are not reflected in the image. If I go back to CR the changes are there. This is something new as all the CR changes have updated the image in the past.

Did PS 2020 change the way SO are updated from camera raw?

Mac Catalina on imac.

Are you talking abut the ACR filter, opened from the menu in Photoshop - or the ACR raw processor, which you get when you double-click a smart object to open it in its own window? Those two are different things.

ACR filter opened in PS.

I took the image back into the Camera Raw Filter and changed the image from color to b&w and then closed. What was interesting is the thumb nail smart object turned b&w but the image showing in PS 2020 was color. The CRF changes are not showing up in the image, just the thumbnail.

The camera raw filter doesn't do anything to a smart object. It's just a filter sitting on top of the smart object, it doesn't change the SO in any way.

To do that, you have to open the smart object. Double-click the thumbnail. and the SO opens into its own window. If what is contained within the smart object is a raw file, it will open into the camera raw processor. That's not the same as the camera raw filter.

Yes, it's confusing, but the ACR filter is a simplified pipeline for RGB files, allowing the ACR controls to be used from within Photoshop, but without having to open the full ACR processor.
