Question

Smart Object was unexpectedly rasterised at some point in my last session. Can I restore it?

I have a Smart Object representing weeks of work. However, I opened up my document today to find that this Smart Object was just a rasterised layer - it must have been like that when I saved it, last night.

This is really troubling, because I've already started working from this SO as a guide. Having to redo it would negate a lot of my work.

I have two questions:

1. How could this have happened? I wouldn't have done this on purpose, and I would never have clicked past a 'rasterise layer' warning for this object. I've looked it up, and there don't seem to be any hotkeys that might have accidentally rasterised my SO.

2. Can I recover the Smart Object? I've switched off my PC since last time I was working on this.

What happened is Adobe changed the way their UI works to automatically raster when you do some steps in order to be more i-device friendly... This change was not considered important enough to make help files for or do any actual testing because they where pushing a deadline

Hi! I understand your pain. To answer your second question first, unfortunately no, if you have saved the file and closed it, then you have lost the ability to move back in history to recover your layered Smart Object. You can turn this layer into a Smart Object, but you cannot bring back all of the indivudual editing capabilities that you had before.

This is no consolation, but it comes from my own experience--it doesn't take as long to rebuild it as it did the first time.

As far as how--do you remember merging any layers, or applying a filter that could only be applied to a rasterized layer?   Did you at one point save the file as a pdf? Did you by chance save it as a separate file?

It's hard to know exactly what happened, and I hope some of the others will have more insight into this issue as they view your post.
