Question

Smart Objects copied from RGB illustrator file reopen as CMYK when edited in Illustrator

This is driving me crazy

If I create a logo in an RGB illustrator file and paste that file into an RGB photoshop file, everything seems fine, but when I double click on the smart object logo to open as illustrator file to edit, it opens as a CMYK document in illustrator. I want an RGB smart object to reopen for editing as an RGB document.

I am synced via bridge to NAGP2

What am I overlooking to change this behavior? Is it the pantone book colors?

I can't replicate that here using Photoshop CC v21.2.1 and Illustrator v24.2.3 on Windows 10 v1909. Opening the smart object opens the RGB AI file in Illustrator

Thanks Dave,

I think I'm narrowing this issue down to the inclusion of pantone color book swatches retaining their original CMYK values in the object that is pasted into photoshop as a smart object.

I'm using the pantone + coated color library, and the issue disappears when I convert those swatches from "book" to "rgb" and delete any color book swatches from the illustrator document's swatch dialog altogether. It seems as if there is any pantone color book information in the illustrator document, then the object pasted into photshop as a smart object will reopen in illustrator as a CMYK, but won't if all of that color book swatch information is scrubbed.

But, here's the thing, converting the swatches to RGB in illustrator creates a slight mismatch of color when the corresponding color is chosen for layer or other effects from the photoshop color dialog in libraries>Pantone + coated which are based on LAB values.

I can rebuild all of my swatches in illustrator RGB with new names, but that is cumbersome and slightly innacurate.

I would love to know if this replicates for you using a spot color pantone color book swatch painted object pasted into photoshop as a smart object.

If it doesn't, do I have a buggered up color prefs support file somewhere that I might try deleting?

I've already deleted the ACEConfigCache2.lst which solved a syncing issue that was supposed to be fixed in the latest releases, but doesn't seem to be totally fixed. when I get syncing issues, I delete this and things reset to correctly sync.

Edit, All of my final product is separated and printed in pantone matched spot colors.

Thanks!

Why are you asking Photoshop? Photoshop does not support Illustrator files all  it may do is embed the  AI files in the smart object. If you Open the Smarts Object Photoshop should copy the illustrator file to s temp file and gave it to your system to have it open in the application associated with the illustrator file type which should be Illustrator. I would think thes is an AI problem.

It does reopen in illustrator, but it opens as an Illustrator CMYK file when the original smart object was copied from an RGB illustrator file that is synced via bridge for sRGB. The original object was never in CMYK format, and nothing in my workflow is CMYK.

If this is an innapropriate question for photoshop users(where I do 90% of my work), perhaps a moderator can move this thread to the appropriate forum

It not an inappropriate question IMO they don't exists.

Its just that Photoshop would not change anything in the AI file. For it does not support AI file. All that Photoshop would do would be straight copies. No changes would be made to the AI files by Photoshop and Bridge would  not have any involvement with Photoshop document smart object layers that would change the layers AI object.  All bridge would change in a Photoshop document would be in the documents meta data not image content.
