Spot healing brush deltes section of thumbnail image

I duplicate the background layer to start cleaning up the background with the spot healing brush and when i click on a spot to correct a section of the image thumbnail disappears and the the checkerboard is revealed. Why is this happening???

Is it also deleting the image on the layer? Turn off the background layer to see. Also show an entire screen shot so we can see what settings you're using with that tool.
