Switching between brush and hand tool outside of the canvas causes all tools to stop working

I switch between brush and hand tool very often and found this bug. I can cause all tools to freeze by switching between hand tool and brush and spam clicking outside the canvas.

All tools stop working. It resets by closing and reopening file. Of course I exaggerate this motion but sometimes I may paint outside the canvas, switch to hand tool to move around and this could happen, it's annoying.

I'm using wacom intuos pro M, the old version which I believe no longer receives driver updates.

Thank you

I think it's a Windows 11 problem. I've never seen anything like that in Windows 10...
Although Windows 11 is available up to 22h2, it is known to be very unstable from the beginning to the present, and I personally recommend using Windows 10 OS unless you have a reason to keep it up to date........

I upgraded my PC in March 2022, I wasn't using photoshop back then. Unfortunately I don't have another pc, I'd have to roll back to Windows 10. I quite regret updating to windows 11 and I wouldn't be surprised if that's the cause

Here's a recording of what it looks like. I was trying to replicate it as I got your reply but it wouldn't work. Not sure how that goes, sometimes as I'm working on an image it'll happen when I barely click outside the canvas.

I think I rolled back a few versions, may have been 2021 and it still happened.

So if its a windows 11 issue I think i'll just have to get used to it.

thanks

Since when did you use Windows 11? I'm using Windows 10 OS and I'm trying to reproduce what you said, but I can't reproduce it.
I've seen a lot of minor error reports in Reddit and forums where the taskbar freezes in Windows 11. (Not only in Photoshop, but also in various programs, even when you just open and close folders.)

So if you can try Photoshop on another computer (especially Windows 10OS). I recommend you to test it. I think it's a Windows 11 issue.
And I wonder if it's only Photoshop 2022 version or if the bug occurs even if it's installed in 2021.
And it would be nice to record a video with a cell phone or camera and attach what actually happens.

Hi @CShubert sorry for the delay, I was off for a bit and got a new subscription so I have the latest version of PS. I did that manual reset by dragging the folder out. The bug is still present unfortunately. Any other ideas please?

Thanks

Hi @23341107 you mentioned you reset your prefernces, but did you do a manual remove?

Let's make sure we're in a default state and there are no stale settings somewhere:

Restore your preferences using this manual method:

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#Manually

Does it work correctly?

If that doesn't solve it, you can quit Photoshop and put the Settings folder back.

Thank you,

@CShubert @Jqqerry any ideas for solution? thank you

@Jqqerry once the "tools freeze", the view of the canvas is stuck to the position where the hand tool last panned to. I can press my keyboard and it will cycle through the different tools, I can see the icon thats selected on the left toolbar. But the mouse remains as the windows arrow cursor and doesnt change.

The tools work again by closing the document and opening it again, or a new document.

What you're saying is that "all tools stop working" is actually Photoshop stopped and forced to shut down as a taskmanager?

Or is it just that the hand tool shape is floating on screen and the tools are not activated by pressing any other key?

If it's the latter, try just press once the space bar. There have been bugs that have been pressed automatically for many years without pressing the space bar. In that case, pressing the space bar will resolve the symptoms.(Not fixed yet. Every time that hand tool bar retained occurs, you have to press the space bar once)

@CShubert I updated my Nvidia drivers. I found my wacom driver was outdated by 1 version on the website and updated it. I reverted my photoshop 1 version back. Sadly the bug is still there. How many versions do I need to go back? Thanks

Thank you for the sysinfo @23341107, it appears that NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB driver is 7 months old, if there is an update you should do so.  Also, check with Wacom to make sure you have compatible drivers and restart, does the issue still persist?  Have you tried rolling back a version of Ps to see if that solves this?
