Temp files only showing when Photoshop is open

Question

I was working on a school project on photoshop, but it just randomly shut down. I usually work on a backup USB? a hard drive USB? I don't know what it is, but I use it anyway because I have no more space on my laptop. I was able to find the photoshop temp on the USB drive, but whenever I try to open it, it says that it is already active. Would you please help me to recover my work?

That said, I would rather free space on the local disk by backing them up, rather than working from a portable USB disk.
