*TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE* Photoshop CC v21.0.2 performance on Ryzen 3700x with 64Gb RAM and Radeon VII

Dear Photoshop developers,

i recently upgraded from a 2017 MacBook Pro 13 base model (two cores i5 w/ 2.3 Ghz and 8Gb 2133 RAM) to a PC with the following specs, since i felt i definitly needed more performace for editing large PSD files and photos:

  • Ryzen 7 3700x CPU
  • 64Gb 2666Mhz DDR 4 RAM (Corsair Vengeance Pro)
  • ASRock Radeon VII (16Gb VRAM)
  • ASRock B450 Steel Legend Mainboard
  • Samsung Evo 970 1TB NVME SSD (Win 10) + Intel 660p 1TB SSD extra space

All the drivers are up-to-date as of writing this.

I've used Photoshop since CS5 on several Macs and never had any complaints regarding the given performance that my Macs offered. But none - NONE - of my Macs came even close to the performance of my new Windows PC. However using Photoshop v21.0.2 on this beastly PC is by far *the* worst Photoshop experience i've ever had.

Goddamn is it slow. Converting a layer of a 24MP photo to a smart object takes 4 seconds. On my MacBook Pro Base Model (!) it takes less than a second. Showing a preview of a filter (reducing shake) => all 8 Cores straight to 100% for a goddamn eternity, even Spotify stops playing music - but the funniest part is, that these cores don't even get hot. The temp sits at a comfortable 30-40°C. I couldn't render ONE FREAKING FILTER. Oh, and the RAM (~ 40Gigs / 70% are assigned) never gets used past 2 Gigs. Don't get me started on the Graphics Card - it's not utilized AT ALL.

I've downgraded to v20.0.8 but that does not help either. What happened? Am i too stupid to use Photoshop on Windows? Everything works smoothly on this machine but Photoshop - be it Games, Capture One, Rendering, you name it. I have to edit Photos and Files for paying clients and as of right now i simply cannot use Photoshop.

I reinstalled Photoshop (latest version) several times without changing something else, restarted and somehow most of the performance issues are solved. What's still slow:

  • Converting into a smart layer still takes several seconds (v20.0.8 was instant)
  • turning on the preview for reducing motion blur / shake still takes all 8 cores to 100% and takes forever, thus rendering PS unusable
  • (3D workspace, but i guess that's kinda normal)

Other intense filters, like blur galery, are snappy even on large 6000x4000px 300ppi images. Maybe there are some other things that are still slow (haven't tried painting on a large canvas with oil brushes for example) but so far most of the issues seem indeed gone. Maybe a further update will resolve the other two issues.

So regarding me the thread can be set to solved. Thanks all for helping.

I'm having very similar issues to this but had only noticed in on converting to Smart Objects thus far - I just posted my own topic.

It's around 10 times slower than it should be.

I don't think I'd consider either of our issues resolved - are there some systemic issues with Ryzen and Photoshop?

Disappointing when Puget Systems (who are the only reliable source of benchmarks for Adobe products) roundly recommend AMD CPUs lately.

I don't use Quadro (I use a GTX1080)  but I do use NVidia Studio drivers. These are release less often than the gaming drivers and seem to be tested for reliable working. In addition, when I do update the driver I select "Advanced" then "Clean Install". This ensures that the full driver is installed and does not rely on older components

Hello Dave,

Thanks for your input. Maybe AMD offers something similar for their graphic cards. I'll look into it!

Those last two points are clearly video driver related. So maybe your driver is the latest, but still there are bugs. This is in fact quite common. Drivers are released mainly to satisfy the gamers and let them run all the newest games, and if this introduces bugs elsewhere they fix those much later. It's a huge problem for many Photoshop users.

I got so fed up with video driver bugs that I switched to NVidia Quadro cards. Rather underpowered at the same price point if you take it at face value, but they are reliable, and that more than makes up for it. Quadros are specifically targeted at graphics, 3D and CAD.

Ok, so in fact it seems like i'm in fact too stupid inexperienced for Photoshop on Windows. Damn 😉

If you can rule out the video driver (not because it's "latest", but because I assume you tried to disable it), next in line of suspects would be third-party plugins or extensions, or indeed any utility or app you may have installed that could interfere in some way. Some font managers can do this, for instance.

What I can say is that this is not normal. Everything is snappy and instant on my two Windows 10 desktops.

Photoshop is mainly bandwidth limited, not CPU-limited. It moves large amounts of data around, and the most critical component is the scratch disk. With a 1TB NVMe you should be in good shape, assuming you haven't filled it up with images and other stuff, but check to make sure.

Could it be bad permissions? Are you full administrator? Can you make a new user account and try there?

Hi there,

We are sorry about the experience with Photoshop on your Windows PC.

Please check and ensure that you have all the latest Windows updates installed on the computer. Also, please update the drivers for the graphics card on the computer through the manufacturers website to check if that helps with the performance.

You can go to the Preferences of Photoshop, then Performance and increase the RAM usage to 75%. Uncheck the option to Use Graphics Processor, check the option for Legacy Compositing, change the Cache Level to 2 and the Cache tile size to 128K. Then quit and relaunch Photoshop to check if that helps.

You can also try to reset the preferences of Photoshop using the steps mentioned here: https://helpx.adobe.com/in/photoshop/using/preferences.html

You may want to backup your actions, brushes, etc. before you reset the preferences. Please check: https://helpx.adobe.com/in/photoshop/using/preset-migration.html

Regards,

Nikunj

Hello and thank you for your reply.

Unfortunatly a) i've already tried these settings, b) tried to reinstall Photoshop several times and c) none of this helped.

I'm getting really desperate here.
