Text in Photoshop invisible unless I zoom in or out

I started having this issue today, and I can't seem to figure out what's wrong. Photoshop worked fine yesterday, but now whenever I try typing something, the line that indicates the location where the letters are supposed to show up just moves but no letters show up behind it, as if I was just pressing space. The only way I can get to see any changes is when I either zoom in or zoom out, and sometimes clicking on another tool works, but not often. This happened very suddenly and I can't pinpoint what I did wrong. I would like a detailed answer please since I'm not very tech-savvy.

edit: I have 1 TB storage, 8 GB RAM, and CORE i7

Make sure your text color isn't the same as the background. Sometimes I do a ctrl-T to find where things are if they are too small. If all that checks out, I would reset your preferences. That's the usual culprit, when things suddenly don't work right.

The text is black and the background is white, so I don't think that's the problem. I did ctrl-t and the font is 45 pt, big enough to be seen. Like I said, the changes aren't seen until I zoom in or out. How do I reset my preferences?

Is there another layer above the Text layer? Move the text layer to the top.
