Maybe you should be looking at Adobe Express or Photoshop Elements rather than Photoshop? Photoshop is much more powerful but is designed for professional use and doesn't offer much handholding. Express in particular is designed for inexperienced users without much graphics knowledge.

Can you post some examples to clarify what are you trying to achieve?

  • Choose File > Open and open the image
  • Use the Type tool from the Tools panel on the left. Because it's a poem, drag the Type tool to create a too-large frame and paste the text into the frame. (Do I have to say copy it from somewhere?)
  • Open the Character and Paragraph panels from the Window menu. Use these to format the text.
  • When finished, use the Type tool to resize the text frame to a reasonable size

Save in a format that supports layers so you can make edits later. Save to PSD or TIFF. Do not save to JPEG, which will flatten your document and you will not be able to edit the text. Save when you start and save often as you go.

I would create an image like that by first doing the style alterations I wanted to do to the photo image in Photoshop. But then I would place the photo image into either Adobe Illustrator or Adobe InDesign and create the overlaid graphics there. That's because the superimposed lettering and graphics would be maintained as vector-based objects and print much sharper than the photo in the background.

What's the problem you are having?

Not a graphics person so don't even know where to look on the site. Must be a program I can clip and paste image/text into?

Are you saying that you don't have Photoshop and are looking for an application? If so, try Adobe Express — there is a free version and a Premium (paid) version. See if the free version works for you.
