Text Layers Disappearing At Random

So lately I've been designing a lot of social posts & emails that I typically do in Photoshop because I can slice them out. However, I noticed a bug that I can't report such as when the program crashes. Every once in a while I will notice layers of my copy are completely missing, even if I save the file and come back to it.

It's VERY frustrating when you have almost an entire design finished & you have to re-do specialty copy etc.

Also, not sure if this is my machine or PS, but I also noticed that when I save PNGs out, they turn crazy colors or appear glitched in the thumbnails & I have to re-save them.

I don't think I am the only one with the text issue as I asked a friend and she is also experiencing this.

I'm not going crazy am I??

A bug was fixed just a few versions ago where the use of the notes tool could delete layers. IIRC, it was fixed in 23.3.2 or 3.

@c.pfaffenbichler
I can assure it was definitely not accidental deletion. When creating multiple posts with the same or similar messaging for marketing, I typically create groups for each post, duplicate the text into each group & edit accordingly. When I was going back into the other versions, I went to duplicate the text and it was just mysteriously gone from each group. At first I thought it was me but I pretty much work exactly the same each time and have been doing so for many years now so I am fairly confident it wasn't an accidental press of a button. When I asked a friend of mine about it, she said she had a similar issue and also thought she was going crazy or perhaps deleted it herself. So given that, I don't think it was coincidence, which is why i wanted to see if anyone else was having a similar issue.

Program: Photoshop CC 2022

OS: MacOS Big Sur 11.6

Honestly, I don't know if there is any way to troubleshoot this? The layers were gone, and when I went back into the history panel, there was no actions even related to the creation or deletion of the text layers that I could simply undo. I mean, even if I accidentally deleted it, would it not then show up in the history panel or a simple Command+Z could solve?

Also, I don't typically use customized presets etc. Never had the need for them, not super sure how that aspect works / wouldn't be needed for my workflow really.

Can you reproduce the issue at all or does it seem to happen completely randomly?

As for the History: How many steps?

The Type Layers’ absence can be confirmed both on Canvas and in the Layers Panel?

Could you please post screenshots with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Options Bar, History, …) visible? Ideally before and after the disappearance of the affected Type Layers.

The presets I mentioned would include custom Brushes, Actions, Patterns, Styles, Keyboard Shortcuts, … and if you never created any of those then backing them up would naturally not be necessary.

Still you may want to check your current General, Interface, Workspace, Tools, Performance, Scratch Disks, … Preferences and certain Tools’ settings in order to be ablre to recreate them quickly after resetting the Preferences.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to recreate the issue, it was totally at random both times it happened. I can try to see if working with the same file periodically will show it again.

Once I am able to recreate this or come across it again, I will try my best to post screenshots. I assume something along the lines of layers panel and history? Perhaps this will be tricky to prove as it may just appear like it's an empty file or that I deleted said layers maually?  Hmm...

I use Photoshop primarily for image editing so I rarely utilize Type Layers and haven’t observed this but unless you can find some way to reproduce the issue reliably it might be hard to consider it a bug.

So: Under wich EXACT circumstances does the issue occur?

What are the program and OS versions?

Is there any possibility of accidental manual deleting?

What have you done for all-purpose trouble-shooting so far?

Restoring Preferences after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved might be a good starting point:
