I would like to respond but keep getting a message about invalid HTML, even after spending time in my reply.

Were you using copy and paste from another application? If you copied from Word, that can bring in html. One thing I do sometimes (it sounds strange) is paste into the subject line of an email, then copy from there to get plain text. Try that.
