The black brush doesn't work.

The black bursh doesn't work. I can't paint dark on a white mask. I can't paint on the photograph with a black bursh.

The white brush works fine. The draker I make the brush, the more translucent the color gets.

What wrong and how to fix this?

Check the opacity and blending options of the layer itself. Can you post a screen shot of the options bar for the brush?

Okay, yes! you were right! the blending mode for the brush itself was on lighten and I've checked the blending mode for the layer. Thank you a lot!!! I spent so much time trying to figure our what was going on!

Look in your options bar - what are the settings? Make sure the blend mode is set to normal and the opacity is set to 100%. Sounds like the blend mode... probably set to lighten or screen.
