Question

The brush tool will not work on a layer mask

I've been scanning old B & W negatives & adding layers of color to the files. Last night the brush tool just  stopped working. It won't remove color from layers, won't add color back in.  I've tried several different files with different types of fill layers & the brush won't work. Any thoughts ?

Thank you all for the replies. While I don't know how I changed the settings, once the brush was reset, I was back to work. Thanks again

Also check blending mode and Opacity and Fill settings for the layer on which you are painting.

If you are working with layer mask you may need to check Window > Properties for layer mask like Density and Feather.

Sorry about the delayed responce. Here is the screen shot. The first layer was a skin tome for the model's legs, then next was a slightly lighter toned layer for her hands. 3rd layer was red for the roses. I then added a layer of green & that's when the brush stopped working. After a while, I trashed all the color layers. didn't save & rebooted. Still didn't work. This screen shot was from a day later. I copied the original, saved it as the back ground & 1st color is the blue as shown to color the chair.

Your screenshot shows your brush is in Soft Light blending mode (see the options bar at the top).

Painting with Black on a White surface (your mask) with Soft Light blending mode will still result in White so no change. Change the brush blend mode to Normal
