Question

This is a weird one...

Okay, let's see if I can explain this clearly.

I have a PSD file open in Photoshop CC 20.0.6.

I want to save the file as a JPEG. So I hit Command, Shift, S and the Save As window pops up.

I go to the Format drop down window and change the format to JPEG.

In the format window it now says JPEG instead of PSD. But, up in the top window the file name still ends in PSD, not JPG. If I hit Save, the file saves as a PSD. I can't change the file format. And, if I try to reopen that new PSD file I get a message saying the file cannot be read and it won't open. I've tried it on a few different images, tried making dupes and saving them, shut down my computer and restarted. I can't figure it out. (And, just in case you're a Genius at an Apple store; Yes, my computer is plugged in and turned on!)

I've been using Photoshop since the mid '90's, I'm not a complete idiot with it. (Well, my wife may argue about the idiot part).

Any ideas? I'm stumped.

I'm using 10.14.6 on my Macbook Pro and if I Save ad Jpeg, I get the correct dialog showing the .jpg extension and warning me the jpeg will be saved as a copy without layers.

Does sound like you are using Catalina and Photoshop has not been retooled for it. System Requirements are still 10.14.6 at the latest. Trouble is Catalina will not warn you to make sure your drivers, hardware, plugins and Adobe software are certified before running the upgrade.

    Dave nailed it.

That is correct operation. From the current layers document in Photoshop Image window title  "Name.psd @ zoom % (Layer Name, Mode/color bit depth) You saved a  flat Jpeg file "DocumentName, jpg" your layered document its is still in Photoshop its still the current active Document continue editing it save a psd if you made changes and  close  if you are now your done. You could also open the Jpeg file in Photoshop and have bothe the layered document and flattened Jpeg Document open in Photoshop.

If before you saved the Jpeg file you  flatten your layered document. When you then save the Jpeg file  Photoshop may switch from editing your old layered document to editing the saved  Jpeg file for the jpeg file would be the appropriate backing file for the flattened document in Photoshop.  All Photoshop need do is change the Image window title and the backing file foe the Document from the psd file path to the jpeg file path.

It sounds like you are using the Catalina OS
    If so, see here:

You pegged it, Dave, thanks. This post was actually for another photographer friend of mine. I told him what you said and you were right. He had just updated to Catalina before this began happening. Thanks, Amigo, you rock.
