Tool Menus not showing and saving issues

I'm running PS 23.5.4 on an iMac with Catalina. I upgraded from CS6 recently, which ran flawlessly for ten years. This new version gets more glitchy by the day. Today the flyout menus on the toolbar have stopped working. I can toggle between the options by holding the Alt key and clicking on the tool, but the flyout menus no longer appear. Also, when going to save a file I have to wait a full minute before the saving options window appears. I am just starting a big job and have wasted an hour already today. Please help!

Unfortunately CS6 was built for your 2013 iMac. Newer versions takes you closer towards incompatibility.

 

Example: 35 GB is not enough HD space to effectively run Photoshop depending on your workflow. You could be running out of HD space and scratch disk, thereby causing cascading issues until it fails completely.

 

Also your 2013 iMac is right on the fringe of meeting recommended specs for current Photoshop builds - the 780M chip is slower than most current graphics cards and the processor may be struggling if Photoshop is not the only process running.

 

One thing to try is to go to Photoshop/Preferences/General and click "Reset preferences upon quit" and relaunch PS.

The second thing is to go to Photoshop/Preferences/Technology Previews and check "Deactivate Native Canvas".

What year is your iMac?

How much free HD space do you have on your Macintosh HD?

What do you have for space in your Photoshop Preferences/Scratch Disk?

In Catalina, go to Apple System Prefs/Security and Privacy and make sure Photoshop is listed in Full Disk Access.

I have 35Gb space available on the hard drive. Photoshop is listed in Full Disk Access as mentioned.

Unfortunately CS6 was built for your 2013 iMac. Newer versions takes you closer towards incompatibility.

 

Example: 35 GB is not enough HD space to effectively run Photoshop depending on your workflow. You could be running out of HD space and scratch disk, thereby causing cascading issues until it fails completely.

 

Also your 2013 iMac is right on the fringe of meeting recommended specs for current Photoshop builds - the 780M chip is slower than most current graphics cards and the processor may be struggling if Photoshop is not the only process running.

 

One thing to try is to go to Photoshop/Preferences/General and click "Reset preferences upon quit" and relaunch PS.

The second thing is to go to Photoshop/Preferences/Technology Previews and check "Deactivate Native Canvas".

    Further to this post. The above problems happen when opening NEF (Nikon RAW) files via the Camera RAW plugin from my D810. I just tried with the saved jpeg of one of these, and everything works perfectly again. ??

    Bizarrely, regarding the Save As command not working... If I work on an image and then Save As, nothing happens. But if I move to the next desktop in Mac OS the dialog window immediately appears, and when I click "Save" is flips back to the Photoshop Desktop again... Go figure!
