Tool Preset For Clone Tool

I just upgraded to Photoshop CC 2018 and when I try to use the clone tool, it tells me that no tool presets defined for current tool.  I just want the plain clone tool - nothing fancy.  How do I get there?

    Select the Clone tool.

Right click inside the image window to open the brush panel.

Chose a preset.  Hard round works well.

You can adjust size and hardness by alt right clicking and dragging.

Left right for size, and up down for hardness.

That seems to work except it's a delayed response.  Then I tried to use the Lasso tool and there was no response.  Is there a preset I need to set for that tool also?
