Transparent PNG images not being imported with transparency(still has white background)

I am using an Ipad with the latest PS.  For months i have been able to cretae an image with the background removed and I have been able to import these images into photoshop.

for some reason about a few weeks ago, when I import these imagss, none have backgrounds removed. I confirmed I was using the PNG format. 

this pretty much defeats the need to use Photoshop. I mean, if I am unable to import an image with it's background removed then I really dont need PS.
